The NBA's reigning two-time MVP is picking up right where he left off.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 116-104 win over Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs at the Frost Bank Center on Tuesday night to kick off the 2026-27 NBA season. Gilgeous-Alexander looked as confident as ever coming out of the offseason and dropped 32 points with 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

The Thunder pretty easily shut down Wembanyama, too. He had just 12 points and 13 rebounds, and had only a single made field goal on the night. Wembanyama bolted off the court as soon as the final buzzer sounded.

"We're just happy to be back," Gilgeous-Alexander said on NBC after the win. "The NBA's back. It's a longer summer when you don't win, and we felt that this summer. We're just happy to be back.

"[It's] one of 82. This doesn't prove anything, this doesn't mean anything. … We took a step in the right direction."

The rivalry between the Thunder and Spurs heated up almost instantly on Tuesday night.

After a contentious stretch early, Spurs guard De'Aaron Fox suddenly grabbed Thunder star Chet Holmgren by the hip and slammed him down as they were jostling for position in the paint. Holmgren, the 7-foot-1 center, is almost a full foot taller than Fox.

That, of course, led to a pretty big scuffle in the paint. In the end, Wembanyama, Jalen Williams, Jaylin Williams and Kenrich Williams all received technical fouls for their actions. Fox was hit with a flagrant, too.

But that sparked a huge run for the Thunder. They broke the game open with a quick 9-0 run after the altercation and ended up pushing it to 22-3 to take a 26-point lead at its peak. Gilgeous-Alexander dropped 16 points in the first half, and the Thunder took a 21-point lead into the break. They had 11 different players score, and went an impressive 10 of 14 from the 3-point line.

Wembanyama, meanwhile, struggled offensively. While he had three blocks in the first 24 minutes, he went a rough 0 of 7 from the field.

The Spurs opened the second half about as good as they could have and cut the game back to single digits after a 14-3 run. But it didn't last long, thanks in part to a huge sequence from Thunder rookie Aday Mara. The big man stuffed Wembanyama at the rim and then threw down his own lob at the other end just moments later.

Wembanyama finally got his first bucket of the night to fall right at the buzzer of the third quarter on a reverse slam. He had missed his first 12 shots of the night, which is the worst shooting start in any game of his career. But the dunk cut the deficit to 13 points and kept the Spurs within striking distance.

In the end, though, the Spurs just couldn't recover from their first-half struggles. The Thunder expertly survived one last push in the fourth to cruise to the 12-point win.

Stephon Castle led the Spurs with 24 points and seven rebounds. Dylan Harper added 18 points, and Fox finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Jared McCain added 20 points off the bench for the Thunder to go with Gilgeous-Alexander's night. McCain made a career-high six 3-pointers, too. Holmgren finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.

While it's only the first night of the regular season, and these two teams will meet again plenty of times over the next several months, the Thunder clearly were itching for revenge after last season's loss in the Western Conference finals. This rivalry is, clearly, alive and well.

The Thunder dominated pretty much from the start for a 116-104 win over a Spurs team that beat them in the Western Conference Finals last season.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the way with 32 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Victor Wembanyama struggled on offense while tallying 12 points, 13 rebounds and 6 blocks on a 1-for-13 shooting night.

The rivals won't meet again until Feb. 11 under what promise to be dramatically different circumstances.

The Spurs have emptied their bench with a 114-100 deficit and less than a minute remaining. This one's over. A strong statement from the Thunder on opening night in a rematch of the WCF.

The Thunder are on an 8-0 run, including a clutch 3 from Jared McCain over Victor Wembanyama. San Antonio's running out of time.

Victor Wembanyama's back on the court with 5:06 remaining and OKC holding a 102-94 lead. It's go time for San Antonio.

Victor Wembanyama remains on the bench with the game clock under 6 minutes and San Antonio trailing, 102-92. When will Mitch Johnson put him back in?

Two Dylan Harper free throws have cut OKC's lead to 95-88 with 8-plus minutes remaining. The Spurs are well within striking distance.

Ok, Dylan Harper's right back in the game. He went back to the scorer's table almost as soon as he checked out and appears to have avoided sustaining an injury.

Dylan Harper landed awkwardly at the start of the fourth quarter and tweaked something in his lower leg.

He tried to play through it, but took himself out of the game after a couple of possessions. He stayed on the San Antonio bench, so hopefully nothing too serious.

The Thunder recovered a bit to end the third, and are now headed to the final period with a 13-point lead.

Victor Wembanyama finally got a field goal to fall at the buzzer here. He's just 1-of-12 from the field in what is the worst shooting stat in any game throughout his career.

Aday Mara just broke up a Wemby lob at the rim, and then threw down a lob himself on the other end to complete the incredible sequence.

The Thunder are suddenly up by 15 again.

De'Aaron Fox has cut this game to single digits for the first time since the opening minutes with this layup. The Spurs have done everything right so far in the third.

We might have a game again. The Spurs are up to a 14-3 tear now after that last Stephon Castle 3-pointer, and the Thunder have called another timeout.

It's 68-58 with 8:22 left in the third.

That's a 6-0 start for the Spurs to force a quick Thunder timeout, and it's now a 15-point game again.

That's exactly how San Antonio needed to open the third.

This could be much worse, but the Thunder are fully in control of this contest at the midway point. They out-scored the Spurs 31-16 in the second quarter.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leads all scorers with 16 points. Victor Wembanyama is 0-7 from the field.

The Thunder got their run to 22-3 before Julian Champagnie finally hit a 3-pointer to end it. The Spurs so far have gone just 2-17 from the field this quarter. Not great.

Victor Wembanyama just blocked Chet Holmgren twice in a row, and this Spurs crowd is loving it. Wemby is up to three blocks already tonight, and we're not even to halftime.

Well, that's a 9-0 run for the Thunder now after that scuffle. It's suddenly a 16-point game midway through the second quarter.

The only points the Spurs have scored this period have come from the stripe.

De'Aaron Fox got a flagrant foul for throwing Chet Holmgren down in the paint.

Wembanyama and all three Williams' on the Thunder all received technical fouls after that. But nobody was ejected, so we carry on.

Things got very heated just now after Fox threw Chet Holmgren down to the ground hard in the paint. That sparked a bit of a scuffle, and Victor Wembanyama came through to get right in the middle of it.

We'll see what comes of the review here…
