I’m the guy that usually analyzes these clips and explains why, under nba rules, it’s not a travel

This is a travel

I was about to say the same thing. He palms the ball almost immediately and the takes like 5 more steps. This one is indefensible

He ends the float, then re-floats it to sell that it was moving the whole time lmao

4. u/scientz · 2026-10-22 01:03 UTC

WTF is a float?

Idk if that’s the official verbiage, but it’s when you control the motion of the ball, but it’s still spinning in your hand.

Essentially if the ball is still moving in your hand, you won’t typically be judged to have ended your dribble yet. That’s how a lot of the guys stretch the rules.

It kinda cracks me up that dudes who have hands the size of small nations aren’t considered to be controlling the ball because it’s still spinning while nestled in their gargantuan palms.

The plumbers who invented the game sadly weren't aware of physics, even though it was a big part of their main job.

It’s a rule made to be broken because no ref can catch these reliably.

The point is if you never actually flip your wrist or be on the lower side of the ball, and the ball is clearly spinning aka you aren’t legit palming it, then you are only able to direct it side ways which is naturally how you dribble. This is a case where the rule itself originally is meant for not being too strict on legit natural dribbling rather than the opposite side - so people look less ridiculous than 1970s basketball dribbling.

Now this is super accepted, players have been stretching that boundary since 2000s year by year, decade by decade, that it’s now far on the other side of ridiculous

So a carry then

10. u/Lyndell · 2026-10-22 01:13 UTC

They should have just let Hot Sauce play…

I’m thankful every day that Skip To My Lou did get to play in the league for a bit and was on my team

Even if he did, his whole hand is underneath the ball already. If he put the ball back down to continue his dribble that would be a carry. At that point as soon as his hand goes underneath that should be considered as his gather, because there's nothing left you technically can do with the ball.

13. u/fuciatoucan · 2026-10-22 01:22 UTC

It’s when you lift the ball while it is still spinning while maintaining an active dribble. It has been decided this is no longer a discontinued dribble because it is fun to watch and allows really shifty dribbling.

14. u/ATXBeermaker · 2026-10-22 01:37 UTC

That’s just a lot of words to say they allow traveling.

15. u/axle69 · 2026-10-22 01:50 UTC

Technically yes but I've never minded it too much its what allowed guys like Iverson to break ankles the way he did among many others and isnt too egregious. Shit like this clip though needs Lamelo and the ref shot out of a cannon.

16. u/Chibi_Kaiju · 2026-10-22 01:52 UTC

Now I wanna see Wemby take it coast to coast not dribbling once, just spinning the ball on his finger tip where no one can touch it.

17. u/mnkhan808 · 2026-10-22 01:33 UTC

The famous Giannis 5 step drive lol.

18. u/ish_vh · 2026-10-22 00:44 UTC

You mean incredible

19. u/SoDakZak · 2026-10-22 00:53 UTC

I was unfamiliar with how he would unlock the next level of our game. Screw it, give us the benefit of no calls for now.

Still salty about the rule of cool not being applied to Ants playoff dunk during COVID

To be fair... I think it was only 4.
