The refs believed the ball wasn't going to touch the rim, I'd assume.

Serious contender for most baffling call of the entire season.

3. u/CustardMustard · 2026-10-21 17:10 UTC

All 3 refs directly watching with nothing going on off-ball and they all swallow their whistle. Either incompetence or ulterior motive

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

This is what I tell people when they call me an asshole at work

6. u/CoachStev · 2026-10-21 18:21 UTC

It's also probably why

"Hanlon's razor" is not based on any logical principle or statistical data. It's no more true than any other internet meme that gets repeated on social media.

It's often used to justify bad behavior by corporations that coincidentally increases their profits.

It is based on logical principles. It is intrinsically Bayesian.

How often do people make ordinary mistakes?

What evidence suggests deliberate sabotage?

If ordinary mistakes are common and evidence of malice absent, then incompetence or simple error is the more probable explanation.

This and “dead internet theory” are just shit Redditors like to spout to try and feel smart. Both are stupid.

People need to stop thinking that 3 referees are there for 3 different sets of eyes on the same play. That is not at all why there are 3 refs, and therefore there are not 3 refs "missing" that call. 2 of the refs are not even watching the trajectory of the ball because they have other areas of responsibility.

If you believe 3 refs should simply be watching the ball, you can't complain when there's a non-call on a weakside hold or push, or offball moving screen.

We got it early!

It’s the Mendoza line now

13. u/Kinda-Alive · 2026-10-21 18:13 UTC

Nah. That was the flop call on Brunson after he literally gets shoved by Gobert. This is pretty bad though

14. u/heat_fan_ · 2026-10-21 16:29 UTC

The ref are absolute garbage lol

15. u/Derpy_Mc_Burpy · 2026-10-21 16:41 UTC

Makes the knicks loss even better at least. Refs couldnt give knicks the ring night win

16. u/Tungsten_Hoarder · 2026-10-21 16:43 UTC

Good reminder for us fans it’s been too long

First game of the season and ref fans are already feasting

18. u/Round_Maintenance697 · 2026-10-21 16:55 UTC

it's crazy how people dont recognize that the knicks got the whistle for most of the entire postseason with the exception of the one game they finally clamped down on all KATs fouls.

Have been*

This was genuinely the worst non-goaltending call I’ve seen in years. Some of them are tough judgement calls where it’s tough to see.

This was not one of those instances
