The Heat are 0-4 and the Knicks with a loss tonight will also fall to 0-4. Here is every team in the last 30 years that started 0-4, ordered by win total

In the past 30 years, 80 teams have started 0-4. Of these, just 14 (18%) have made the playoffs, and only 2 (3%) have won a playoff series. Neither of them made the finals or won a conference finals game. Only 1 team won more than 50 games, and the median is 26 wins.
Things are not looking great for either of these teams right now who had championship aspirations going into the season. They'll either fall well short of expectations, or do something no team has done in 30 years.
Knicks have a tough opponent tonight playing the Pistons, but do have a chance to move to 1-3 and not be part of this list.

after what happened last season i am no longer bound by precedent and conventional wisdom. special teams change our understanding of whats actually possible.

No disrespect to the champs but y'all have never been a dominant regular season team. Regular seasons have always just been good enough to get a decent seed, then play with a ton of composure and connectedness in the playoffs.

There’s a great interview with Caruso and the young OKC guys where he says a lesson he tried to pass on was basically: Don’t stress the regular season losses so much. Forget, move on quickly. Keep working.
I think it’s pretty clear there’s a level of teams who really can become ‘serious’ during the playoffs and others who expend way too much energy and effort trying to win regular season personal awards and ‘win’ the 1 seed.

The entire thing everyone was mad at last season when it came to the Knicks was that they acted like a team that could just flip a switch in the playoffs when they hadn't proved anything yet
Well....now they've proved it lmfao
So uh....yeah I'm kinda chilling still
The backup C situation is bad tho

I half agree. The Knicks won 53 games and were a 3 seed last year. They didn't mail in the regular season. They definitely turned it up a notch, and they've done that pretty consistently the last 3 years or so.
I kinda push back when teams with title aspirations think they can really coast, get a 5-6 seed, and it's not going to make a difference. It's just very, very rare that a team, even a veteran one, can flip that switch. There's a difference between not going all-out for a 1 seed and mailing in the regular season.

Arguably the 2016 Warriors' push to win 73 games contributed to their just barely losing the Finals in Game 7. They were playing super intense playoff games a month before the playoffs started.

For context, the Spurs were right on their tails the whole season. If I remember correctly, they didn’t lock up the 1 seed until beating them in the last handful of games, when the Warriors gave them their only home loss of the season.

Also keep in mind that the Knicks don't actually need a high seed as much as other teams because we have a fanbase with the passion and money to turn road games into home games.

I don't want to make excuses and if the team sucks this year I'll have nothing to say, but this team for sure looked like they chilled tf out all summer. SNL, KAT getting married, nonstop media appearances this looks like the biggest basketball break Jalen has taken in years.
And you're completely right, this isn't a team that cares about the regular season too much. They want a top 4 seed and then start kicking it into gear after the all star break.
Not a single Knicks fan I know cares. This team took up a huge amount of my emotional energy and time for 25+ years and now I can't be bothered to lock in until like January probably

It's very obvious they're just in a bad slump to start the season, probably thanks in large part to a NY championship hangover like you suggest. Comparing them to teams like the 90s Clippers is meaningless.
Last season they finished 3rd in offensive rating and so far this season with largely the same roster they're dead last. Brunson has been struggling and they just don't look sharp. Not the way you want to start the season at all, but at the same time, it's clearly nothing close to what this team really is.

BINGO, exactly my thoughts as well. We love to fight an uphill battle, and win.
That being said, we need to get our fucking shit together!!

I hate to agree with a Celtics fan, but nick is lowkey onto something here

I misinterpreted this comment for a second and thought you meant the Knicks are gonna start kicking field goals
15. u/ionospherermutt · 2026-10-27 18:22 UTC
If you thought Steph was shooting from deep wait till Brunson starts kicking three pointers from 65 yards out. This also raises an interesting question of if a field goal kicked from less than 23’9” would be worth only 2 points. Guess we’ll never know since that would be a field goal kicked from inside the end zone and thus would be blown dead as a touchdown the second the holder caught the snap.

JB is more likely to head it in with his big ass head

i think in the same way the Spurs had their emotional release in the WCF then sucked it up, that's what's happening with the knicks, but it's 50 years of pent up emotion that was released

Yeah I think the Knicks (if they lose) join the 03-04 Heat and the 22-23 Lakers on this list in getting past the first round at minimum. The Heat I’m not so certain about anymore but I could also see them breaking the mold if they figure it out.

Knicks punter and kicker are unmatched

We've broken so many records already, what's another one?
